What is the Junior Fitness Program?

Did you know that most high school students do less than 60 minutes a week of vigorous physical activity and graduate with more hours in front of a television than in the classroom? The Junior Fit Program at South Shore Fitness is designed to incorporate physical activity and exercise into the lives of young people while fostering positive social interaction and participation. Because childhood is a critical period for developing lifelong attitudes and activity patterns, this is the best time to begin an exercise regimen.
There are two different programs available for our Junior Fit participants.  The Youth Fitness Program is for children ages 7-11 years of age and the Teen Fitness Program is for teenagers from ages 12-16.

Is it safe for my child to workout in a gym?

Research has clearly demonstrated that strength exercise is a safe, effective, and efficient means for conditioning young muscles, as long as certain safety precautions are in place. At South Shore Fitness we place high priority on education and proper technique to make sure all exercises are executed safely.

What are the benefits of the junior fitness program?

Besides increased physical activity and positive social interaction, the Junior Fit Program offers additional benefits for young people. Participants will see increased muscle strength, balance, coordination, and improved body composition.  They will also enhance their self-esteem, improve their eating habits, and learn techniques to enhance sport performance and to avoid athletic injuries.
If a child would like to work one-on-one to develop certain skills or work on weaknesses, we offer private personal training packages. Please contact the Junior Fit Program Manager for details.

YOUTH FITNESS PROGRAM
AGES 7-11

The Youth Fitness Program (for children ages 7-11) incorporates strength training, games, resistance exercises, balance, agility, flexibility and other age appropriate activities in a safe, supervised environment. Groups of up to four youths will begin each 30 minute session with a warm-up appropriate for that day’s activities and commence with a cool down and stretch period. Activities will rotate and will consist of body weight exercises, as well as use of resistance bands, stability balls, and medicine balls. For children old enough, some cardio equipment and machine weights will be introduced with supervision.

TEEN FITNESS PROGRAM
AGES 12-16

The Teen Fitness Program (for teens 12-16 years old) is geared toward the maturing adolescent.  Emphasis is on teaching the teen how to exercise safely in the gym environment.

Groups of one to four teens will work with one Teen Fitness Trainer.  They will learn how to set-up machines and execute movements with perfect form.  Free weight exercise will be taught with the appropriate weights determined by the fitness professional.  Functional equipment including Bosu and stability balls, medicine balls and resistance bands will also be incorporated into the Teen Fitness Training Program.  Your teen will learn the correct and safe way to exercise… laying the foundation for a lifetime of safe fitness training.
